“how do we hold people accountable for wrong doing and yet at the same time remain in touch with their humanity enough to believe in their capacity to be transformed?”

- bell hooks

Accountability is central to this work.

We are not engaged in this work as a income generating endeavor. This is a project of our ongoing living into accountability.

It is critical for the disruption of settle colonialism, whiteness and Indigenous specific racism that white people; settler people be accountable.

accountability refers to an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility for one’s actions.

In order to be accountable in this work we commit to transparency about our actions and remain open to receiving any feedback that is offered.

We are building and nurturing relationships and seeking ways to repair.

We are sharing our intentions, our processes and our learnings. We are staying aware that intentions are not the same thing as impact.

As facilitators we are not doing this work alone, we are prioritizing relationships and processes that ensure we are co-unlearners and necessarily not thought or content leaders.

We will make mistakes and we are here for the discomfort and work that will continue to be required of us.

Indigenous people and people of the global majority are asking white people to work with white people; to call them into the work of unsettling settler colonialism and dismantling Indigenous specific racism. The central content and material we present in Our Unleaning Community Cohorts has been developed and shaped by Indigenous scholars, colleagues and mentors and we invest in building relationships that continue to guide, encourage and challenge us overall.

Note: regarding white people charging for this work. We know we are walking a fine line as we work to decenter ourselves through centering ourselves - paradoxical for sure. White people charging money to do anti-racism work feels contradictory and uncomfortable. We see and feel the codependent relationship and pull between capitalism and colonialism. Despite our desire and focus on dismantling these systems and structures, we currently live in capitalism and are not free from needing to earn an income. We are committed to continued critical self reflection, learning and unlearning; and we are divesting from the practice of wealth accumulation / financial hoarding.

Processes to date:

Over the months of Jan-Feb 2023 we held meeting with several Indigenous mentors and leaders in this field and have many learnings we are incorporating into this site and our work. One example of this learning is a reminder that accountability is not only individual it is also collective - and so as white people we need to do the work of being accountable and holding each other accountable since it is also not the work if Indigenous people, Black peoples or peoples of color to do this.

Attended a 3 day racial caucusing weekend with Indigenous and peers of colour to receive feedback and engage in deepeded personal and collective learning;

Hosted a community meal with invitation to several Indigenous peers and mentors from local nations to share our work and receive mentoring and direction;

We have run 10 cohorts of community of unlearning - one of which was part of Fiona’s Masters thesis. We did not charge for any of these sessions;

Since Jan 2023 we have offered 2 cohorts of our unlearning and have charged according to the sliding scale on the Offerings page;

Total contributions from participants have been around $6000 - these funds have been reinvested in facilitator training, web hosting and domain costs, and mighty network fees;

There has been no profit from these sessions to date;

The network currently has 29 members and all are in free trial or mentor memberships;

We welcome and encourage feedback our work and process.
